The Proctor Family Community Grants were established through the MacWala Foundation in honour of Lester and Kathleen Proctor, whose lives reflected the values of hard work, family, and community that have long defined Richmond County.
Born in 1919, Lester Proctor dedicated 42 years of service to the railway, helping connect communities and support families throughout the region. Alongside him was his wife Kathleen, born in 1925, whose greatest life's work was raising their ten children and building a home filled with unconditional love, compassion, and support. Known affectionately to many as "Nanny P," Kathleen's kindness, generosity, and welcoming spirit touched countless lives. Whether family, friends, neighbours, or strangers, everyone who crossed her path was made to feel valued and cared for.
Together, their home was a gathering place, and their influence continues to be felt through the generations of children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and community members who were fortunate enough to know them. Lester and Kathleen built a family rooted in resilience, service, and a deep connection to Richmond County.
Inspired by the lives of Lester and Kathleen, these grants are intended to support the people, organizations, and community initiatives that strengthen the fabric of local life. Through small but meaningful investments, the Proctor Family Community Grants help foster volunteerism, community engagement, and local projects that bring people together and make Richmond County a stronger, more vibrant place to live.
Each year, the MacWala Foundation will award a number of Proctor Family Community Grants (up to $500), to local organizations, volunteer groups, and initiatives that are working to improve life in Richmond County.
Whether supporting youth programs, community events, recreation projects, cultural celebrations, environmental initiatives, or volunteer-driven efforts, these grants are designed to help local organizations create a positive impact where it matters most—close to home.
The grants honour a family legacy built not on recognition, but on a simple belief: that strong communities are created by neighbours helping neighbours.
