    Creating Opportunities Through Sport

The MacInnis Family Youth Sports Fund was established through the MacWala Foundation to honour Dennis and Sandra MacInnis, proud children of Richmond County!

Dennis, whose lifelong dedication to hockey and youth development has impacted countless athletes across North America. Raised in Cape Breton, Dennis built a remarkable career in hockey scouting, earning a reputation for his keen eye for talent and commitment to the game. In 2002, he founded International Scouting Services (ISS Hockey) with close friend Chebot Cormier, from their homes in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.

Under his leadership as Director of Scouting, ISS Hockey grew into one of the most respected independent scouting agencies in the sport, providing player evaluations and draft rankings relied upon throughout the hockey world. He remained at the helm of the organization until his retirement in 2020.

Beyond his contributions as a scout, Dennis is equally respected for his commitment to mentoring the next generation of hockey professionals. Through ISS Hockey, he developed and led a mentorship program that provided aspiring scouts and hockey operations personnel with hands-on experience, guidance, and opportunities to learn the craft. Over the years, the program helped launch the careers of hundreds of individuals who have gone on to work throughout the hockey world, from junior and collegiate programs to professional leagues and NHL front offices. For many, Dennis was not only a mentor, but a trusted teacher whose willingness to share his knowledge and open doors left a lasting impact on the game.

Alongside Dennis throughout his journey is his wife, Sandra. Together, they raised four sons while building a life centered on family, community, and service to others. Known for her kindness, generosity, and quiet dedication to helping those in need, Sandra continues to make a difference through her volunteer work with the Antigonish Food Bank. Whether supporting her family, her community, or those facing difficult circumstances, Sandra embodies the values of compassion, humility, and service that are at the heart of the MacInnis Family Youth Sports Fund.

The MacInnis Family Youth Sports Fund exists to help ensure that financial barriers do not prevent young people from experiencing those same opportunities. Through support up to $350 per eligible player, the fund helps young athletes participate, compete, and grow through sport.

    Who Can Apply?

The cost of youth sports continues to rise, creating challenges for many families. Registration fees, equipment purchases, travel costs, and tournament expenses can make participation difficult, even for children who are passionate about their sport.

This fund provides financial assistance to families in Richmond County whose children may otherwise be unable to participate due to financial constraints.

    Funding may be used for:

    • Sport registration fees
    • Equipment purchases
    • Team fees
    • Tournament participation
    • Travel expenses related to organized youth sports
    • Other sport-related costs that create barriers to participation

The MacInnis Family Youth Sports Fund recognizes that financial hardship is not limited to households that meet Revenue Canada's Low-Income Cut-Off (LICO) guidelines. In today's economy, many working families face significant challenges covering the costs associated with youth sports, including registration fees, equipment, travel, and accommodations.

As a result, the Foundation does not rely solely on LICO standards when assessing applications. While financial information or supporting documentation may be requested, each application is reviewed individually, with consideration given to the unique circumstances of the family and the impact that funding would have on a child's ability to participate in sport.

Our goal is simple: to help more young people take part in the sports they love.
